NWS Forecast Accuracy

Pending

Accuracy grade pending, and it stays that way on purpose. We show the raw NWS forecast for Fernie Alpine Resort and do not grade or correct it. Six winters of NWS-against-SNOTEL checking found forecast accuracy here turns on an unresolved snow-measurement question (settled snow depth vs. fresh snowfall), not a fixed per-mountain bias anyone can honestly correct. So we show the number NWS publishes and tell you that is what it is.

Storm Day Strategy

Fernie requires day-of snowfall skiing due to low base elevation (1000-2100m) and temperature fluctuations causing rapid deterioration. Recent pattern shows rain/snow mix common in winter months. After fresh snow, ski immediately as conditions become icy/boilerplate within 24-48 hours. Spring (March) offers best consistency with freezing levels supporting upper terrain. Alternative resorts (Kicking Horse, Revelstoke, Castle) recommended for extended trips.

Terrain Opening Patterns

Higher elevations (Polar Peak area)

Opens: Variable - depends on storm cycle

Polar Peak has erratic opening schedule; Polar Express lift spins worse after dumps

Lower elevations (Deer, Bear, Cedar bowls)

Opens: Later in day after warming

Rain line extends to top of Deer during warm fronts; avoid lower elevation runs during rain events

Powder Stashes

Higher elevation off-piste

Above rain line (typically 1800m+)

Offpiste can be soft after storms; some wind-loaded slopes ski exceptionally well

Dummy Downhill

Mid-elevation

Check conditions before committing; susceptible to rain during warm cycles
