NWS Forecast Accuracy

Pending

Accuracy grade pending, and it stays that way on purpose. We show the raw NWS forecast for Red Mountain Resort and do not grade or correct it. Six winters of NWS-against-SNOTEL checking found forecast accuracy here turns on an unresolved snow-measurement question (settled snow depth vs. fresh snowfall), not a fixed per-mountain bias anyone can honestly correct. So we show the number NWS publishes and tell you that is what it is.

Storm Day Strategy

Red Mountain is a premier powder day destination for locals. Most avoid resort during mediocre conditions but flock to the mountain after significant new snow (3-20cm). Best strategy: monitor snowfall forecasts and ski when 7cm+ fresh snow has accumulated overnight. Early morning visits after powder days yield the best untracked terrain. Spring corn conditions (warm afternoons, cold mornings) are excellent for predictable all-day skiing with velvet groomers and field corn.

Terrain Opening Patterns

Gray Chair

Opens: Mid-December

Opens when lower elevations have adequate base; boot deep powder possible at opening

Lower Lifts

Opens: Early December

Opening often coincides with wind and freezing rain; visibility compromised

Powder Stashes

Upper Mountain Terrain

Upper 2/3rds of mountain above 1500m

Requires tracking early; locals hit these lines hard on powder days

Doug's Run

Accessible via Gray Chair area

Not obvious to visitors; mountain host tours highly recommended for navigation
