NWS Forecast Accuracy

Pending

Accuracy grade pending, and it stays that way on purpose. We show the raw NWS forecast for Schweitzer and do not grade or correct it. Six winters of NWS-against-SNOTEL checking found forecast accuracy here turns on an unresolved snow-measurement question (settled snow depth vs. fresh snowfall), not a fixed per-mountain bias anyone can honestly correct. So we show the number NWS publishes and tell you that is what it is.

Storm Day Strategy

Storm days at Schweitzer produce heavy cloud cover ("Schweitzer cloud") with visibility down to 3 chair length. Conditions typically: light rain/sleet mix transitioning to snow at higher elevations, strong winds on ridges, firm base layer under new snow creating poor surface until tracked. Strategy: Focus on upper mountain Stella terrain where snow remains firmer; avoid ungroomed north-facing blacks which become coral reefy and unskiable; expect bumps instead of meeting them. Storm totals of 4-6 inches overnight become tracked by mid-morning on bluebird follow-up day.

Terrain Opening Patterns

Basin Express/Mid-Mountain
