NWS Forecast Accuracy

Pending

Accuracy grade pending, and it stays that way on purpose. We show the raw NWS forecast for Sun Peaks Resort and do not grade or correct it. Six winters of NWS-against-SNOTEL checking found forecast accuracy here turns on an unresolved snow-measurement question (settled snow depth vs. fresh snowfall), not a fixed per-mountain bias anyone can honestly correct. So we show the number NWS publishes and tell you that is what it is.

Storm Day Strategy

After fresh snow: arrive Sundance line 8:00-8:15 AM for 8:30 opening; secure one decent run and possibly one more before Tod opens; skip groomed runs under chair and Granny Greene's; instead head right off lift down green briefly then seek 'Marginal Conditions' sign toward peekaboo area for untracked powder. Late morning, visit lower Munro Ridge, Expo, Roller Coaster for additional powder. Expect Saturday to be extremely busy with rapid powder deterioration despite manageable lift lines. Tuesday conditions ideal as groomers work overnight snow.

Terrain Opening Patterns

Sun Peaks Resort (Overall)

Opens: Early season - among first in BC interior

Summer grooming program (30+ years) includes stump removal, rock picking, grass planting, and 3-5 year rotation weed/conifer cutting. Snowmaking supplements early season

Gil's Hill

Opens: Not specified

Accessible without touring gear; can be combined with skintrack beyond Gil's Hill for backcountry access

Powder Stashes

Early season powder at Sun Peaks

Throughout resort

Less dramatic base depth than competitors but excellent coverage; powder days often uncrowded; early season storms can deliver 25-30cm of very fluffy snow

Area beyond 'Marginal Conditions' sign

Right off Sundance lift, past green run toward peekaboo area

Best first run after opening; second lap before Tod opens less productive
