Local Knowledge
TGR Community IntelStorm Day Strategy
Upper mountain (gondola, Sky, Canyon, Comet, Dipper) closes at slightest breeze. Monitor wind direction 8am day-of rather than relying on forecasts 7+ days out. If one side begins on wind hold, switch to other side. Nevada side (Boulder, Stagecoach) more reliable than California side during storms. Avoid driving to remote base areas in snow; use free shuttles instead. Expect lower mountain groomer skiing only; steeper terrain likely closed. Spring storm skiing can offer corn conditions if timing right, but risk of slop on warmer afternoons.
Terrain Opening Patterns
East Wall
Opens: Day after major storms
Not always open; requires avalanche control work
Mott Canyon (Mott Gate 1)
Opens: First chair on powder days
Accessible early morning; trees on sides hold snow well
Powder Stashes
Mott Canyon trees (skier's left off Gate 5)
Mott Gate area, trees and sides
Excellent for deep powder after major storms; accessible early morning
North-facing steeps at 11,000 ft
North Bowl area
Reliable powder preservation; benefits from low wind storms
